Police in Italy have exposed another woman posing as a wealthy empress like the con woman Anna Sorokin, living a VIP lifestyle in the heart of Rome that included owning a Bentley and a Ferrari. Sandra Nicole Martinez, 49, is facing charges of aggravated fraud and forgery after it was found she had been driving the luxury cars with forged license plates to avoid paying hundreds of traffic tickets. In the process, she racked up EUR 2,600 in traffic tickets in just a few months in Rome. The woman, who claimed to be from a made-up noble family, has racked up over 600 tickets on her luxury Bentley and Ferrari during her stay in the Italian capital. But it turned out that Martinez, who reportedly rented a home in the heart of Rome to match her "royal persona", does not even own a driver's license. To avoid getting caught by police, she devised a scheme in which she attached a stolen German license plate to her Bentley Continental Cabrio and an expired Austrian plate to the Ferrari California. However, Italian law enforcement soon grew suspicious as they kept seeing the vehicles parked in Rome's historic centre, where only specially authorised vehicles are allowed entry. A deeper investigation soon led them to the vehicle's real owner, Martinez. They were stunned to discover that Martinez had also given herself a fake royal title so she could mingle with Italian socialites and attend lavish parties. Martinez, who otherwise lives in Dubai, had made herself empress of the house of Glodeni which she herself registered in Lebanon in February. She even created an Instagram account based on the fake imperial house where she refers to herself as 'Her Royal and Imperial Highness Princess Sandra'. Police in Italy have seized the 'princess's' cars and said she is being investigated for aggravated fraud and document forgery and is currently looking at a EUR 100,000 fine. Rome's City Police added in a 10th August statement: "Further administrative checks on the evaded reports are still underway, which could lead to additional measures against the woman." Martinez's case closely resembles that of German con artist Anna Sorokin, 33, who became famous for posing as a rich heiress in New York and ripping off hotels, banks and business people. Her story made international headlines after she was exposed and sentenced to four years in prison for fraud in 2019. It even got its own Netflix series named 'Inventing Anna' which was released in 2022. (T4/ends)
