A s rational beings, we know a run isn’t going to kill us, but does that stop us from whining, complaining and pulling out the tantrums when it’s time to lace up our trainers? Hell no. According to Tracey Robson-Garth, national programs manager and nutrition expert at Fernwood Fitness (fernwoodfi tness.com.au), it’s pretty common to hate certain types of training. “We think of exercise as being harder than it actually is for various reasons, such as laziness, fear of failure or being completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of personal goals,” Robson-Garth says. HAPPY THOUGHTS So why does just hearing your most loathed form of exercise uttered have you sprinting to the hills? It’s likely that a gruelling past experience (hello, Year Five swimming carnival!) has tainted your attitude, so it’s time to shake up your mindset. Andrew Sparks, sports psychologist and author of Bring It On – Health and Fitness (sparkselite.com.au, $29.95), advises, “Take part in exercise that you enjoy. If you hate swimming laps, don’t. Instead, go to the beach and hang out in the water with friends. Start doing things that will give you a positive association with the exercise.” BABY STEPS Getting over your exercise hate is as easy as a one-two punch. Firstly, identify the fear factor, then work out a plan to tackle it gradually. “If you enjoy walking but hate running, then continue walking. After a month, run 500 metres and build up slowly that way,” suggests Robson- Garth. “It’s important that you start o enjoying it, then exercise endorphins will kick in and you’ll want to do it more.” How to become besties with the workout you loathe.
