PROTECT WHAT YOU’VE GOT: “Avoid smoking, have a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep. Smoking or a mouth infection can deaden the sensitivity of tastebuds,” says Shumack. you’re younger than you think! “Skin has an amazing ability to heal itself,” says Sydney dermatologist Dr Stephen Shumack. “Skin inside the surface of the mouth can regenerate in just a day or two, and on the genitals every couple of weeks, while the top layer of the epidermis or surface layer of the skin is renewed every ve to six weeks.” PROTECT WHAT YOU’VE GOT: “Don’t wear make-up without a sunscreen underneath – unless it’s SPF15 or more it won’t be e ective,” explains Shumack. “Don’t smoke and always wear sunscreen after 10 minutes of unprotected exposure to the sun. This is especially important when the UV index is over 3, which is most months of the year in Australia except mid-winter in the southern states,” says Shumack. However, a study at New York Medical College found the heart is actually dotted with stem cells that can rejuvenate. Although it’s hard to put an exact time frame on heart renewal, Harvard scientist Dr Piero Anversa has previously said that by the time a person is 80 years old their heart cells would have been replaced four times. The latest research, published in the journal Science, suggests a more modest level of cell replacement – with about half of the heart’s muscle cells exchanged in the course of a normal lifetime. Scientists suggest this knowledge may eventually assist in developing drugs that can help accelerate cell replacement, to improve outcomes after a heart attack. Cardiologist Professor James Tatoulis says, “There is wonderful potential in this eld! Other exciting work is underway where stem cells can be injected into areas of heart damage with the aim of rejuvenating these areas and restoring heart function.” PROTECT WHAT YOU’VE GOT: “To maintain your heart’s longevity, don’t smoke, treat high cholesterol and high blood pressure, exercise and stay in a healthy weight range,” says Tatoulis. EYELASHES: RENEW EVERY THREE MONTHS “Eyelashes tend to have a three-month life cycle,” says Shumack. “Generally, the more common causes of eyelash loss are chemotherapy or some thyroid conditions.” PROTECT WHAT YOU’VE GOT: According to Charlotte Creasey from Sydney’s Lady Lash salon, you can protect natural eyelashes by not wearing waterproof mascara, which can be harder to remove and cause breakage. And for the hundreds of thousands of Aussie women who are following the new trend for eyelash extensions (which are in- lled every two to four weeks for around $50 to $80), be wary of the lash length you choose. “Remember, even thoug
