captiongoodfitness. 127 exercisers The secrets W e’ve all seen them – fit, happy people who just can’t wait to exercise or work out, and who enjoy every minute of it. If you’ve ever wished you could look forward to exercise as much as your next meal or night out, here are the secrets of happy exercisers. If you have to force yourself out the door for every exercise session, it’s time to take the hard work out of your workout, writes Beverley Hadgraft They’ve made exercise a habit Do you know what the most consistent human habit is? It’s brushing your teeth. People can suffer terrible trauma and be unable to eat or sleep but they’ll still brush their teeth, says Gareth Mole, head of sports psychology at Condor Performance. It’s a habit they’re taught as kids and because it’s linked to a time, morning and night, it’s very effective. Happy exercisers do the same thing. They don’t even think about whether or not to turn up to training or go for a cycle, they just do it. what you can do Even the most sedentary people can build up a physiological desire to exercise just by sticking to a consistent routine, says Mole. For instance, you might start by deciding to walk every Friday morning at 7am. If something happens so you can’t walk, it’s better to wait until the following Friday to try again otherwise it won’t stick. It takes 30 repetitions of a behaviour before it starts to become a habit and you get to that stage where you’re either doing it or thinking about it, and can’t imagine your life without it. Alternatively, join a team. Everyone has to set a night for regular matches and training so you won’t be able to wing it. gm1212exep127.pdf Page 127 19/10/2012, 4:27 PM
