You’d drop to your knees to tie them and then look up to discover your buddy just kept on walking. Well, as we get older, sometimes the shoelace is like life and occasionally everyone keeps walking ahead while you’re still figuring out if you should tie one loop or two.“When my friends and I went from primary school to high school, it was like everyone changed heaps over the break, except me,” says Sarah, 15. “I lied about wearing a bra and that I’d kissed a guy at the caravan park WAIT WA I T UP! Locking lips for the first time or getting into a ‘real deal’ relationship are both pretty big, exciting things to happen that might even change you a little. Rushing these events can also stop you enjoying them.Take your time, be patient and wait until the timing feels right – that’s what you owe yourself, no-one else. They’re not things to tick off like a to-do list; they are special experiences to enjoy.“Just because you haven’t been kissed or had sex does not mean it will never happen,” says psychologist and counsellor Nicolle Kapustin (vibrantmind.com.au). “Others might exaggerate their experiences to look cool, but the things they are telling you might not actually be true.”Like Sarah, we sometimes feel pressure to tell some fibs to fit in – while you might be feeling left behind, so are a lot of people around you. Feeling behind because: I HAVEN’T DECIDED WHAT CAREER I’M GOING TO HAVE Your parents casually ask over dinner, “So, what do you think you want to do with your life?” Meanwhile, you’ve been trying to work out whether to wear a halo braid or a high pony tomorrow. And just like that, you realise other people are thinking waaaaay further ahead than you and that can be a scary thing. Worse still is when you’ve picked KFC for work experience so lunch is sorted, but your best friend has picked a
