We all have them… Well, at least half the population do. But sometimes it’s hard to know exactly what is normal, what’s not and what’s just a part of growing up. Plus, with whole areas of shops devoted to bras, how on earth are we meant to find the best one? Luckily, DOLLY is here to the rescue! DEBUNKING YOUR BOOB WORRIES DOLLY Doctor Melissa Kang’s advice will help to put your mind at ease. THE STATS "Nipples grow at a slightly faster rate than the breast in the middle part of puberty, so for a while the areolae (circles around the nipples) are quite big and the nipples are relatively ‘pointy’,"” explains Dr Melissa. Q “There are lumpy breasts and there are breast lumps,” Dr Melissa explains. “Breast tissue is made up of fat, glands (the milk-makers of the future) and fibres that hold it all together. Some women have more ‘fibrous’ breast tissue that feels lumpier or harder.” A defined lump could be something hormonal like a cyst (swollen gland). “Sometimes these go away as the hormones fluctuate and sometimes they persist and can be felt as lumps,” Dr Melissa says. Q “An inverted nipple is where it sinks in rather than sticking out of the middle of the areola,” Dr Melissa says. “These are normal. If girls have them before puberty, they might stay inverted or they might start to protrude.” So, nothing needs to be done about it at all! Q “Breasts can keep growing throughout the teenage years, depending on when they start developing, which is why any cosmetic surgery on breasts is best delayed until you are fully grown,” Dr Melissa says. Another reason for waiting a little while is that self-consciousness about body image is at its peak during this time, and it does settle

These superstars know what it’s like to feel a little bit uncomfortable in their skin, too. Q “Some people have a genetic predisposition to stretch marks and they can be visible with very fair skin,” Dr Melissa says. “There’s no cure, but keeping the skin away from the sun will help them fade with time.” ARIANA GRANDE JENNIFER LAWRENCE KIM KARDASHIAN “I was, like, 12 and all the other girls in my grade had huge boobs already – and I was puny. I’m tiny still to this day; I’m a 32A [ 10A in Aussie sizes]. I’m OK with it now and I’ve learnt to love my body, but at the time I was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’” "I think people are fascinated with breasts that bounce. They are so used to seeing [ fake ones]. People are confused [ that mine bounce]! My breasts have a life of their own.” "I remember crying in the bathtub. I was the first girl in my class to wear a bra. All my friends were super skinny, and that just wasn't my body type. But I watched my mum, who was always comfortable with herself, and she helped me with my outlook.” "Uneven boobs are nothing to worry about and are often more noticeable while they're growing,"” says Dr Melissa. “"One might hang lower than the other, and shapes between women vary a lot too. A whole cup-size difference in an adult woman is normal." “ mine aren’t the same size or shape Jamie, 15 Q CELEB BOOB DIARIES Q “Generally speaking, breasts aren’t painful,” says Dr Melissa. “However, due to hormones that lead to breast-tissue growth, or fluctuations associated with the menstrual cycle (one or two weeks before), girls might experience discomfort or tenderness at certain times.” During early development (when the breast tissue starts to expand beyond the ‘breast bud’) it’s OK to feel sore. If necessary, painkillers will help it settle. Q “Research into breast siz

caption@P@ 1 DOLLY.COM.AU DOLLYMAG 107FINDING A BRA THAT SUPPORTS YOU IS EASY To underwire or not underwire, that is the question! According to Breast Research Australia, 85 per cent of Aussie women are wearing the wrong size bra. If you’re not sure whether you should visit the bra section of a shop yet, you’re confused about what kind to buy or you’re not quite sure about your size, go for a free professional fitting at your local department store. And trust us, these guys have seen it all! We spoke to the awesome peeps at Bras N Things for a little help. UNDERBAND: This one should be firm, but comfortable. You should be able to run a finger under the band. If it’s too tight, you need a larger size or wider hook placement. Make sure you fasten the bra on the first hook when first fitting. PROPORTION: The back and front of the bra should be parallel to your waist or even just a bit lower in the back. The lower edge of the band should anchor between your shoulder blades. The lower the back fits, the better the support. CENTRE FRONT: The centre gusset (the join between the two cups) should lie flat against the breast bone, not bridge away from the body. If it doesn't, your cup size could be too small or the panel could be a smidge too small to accommodate the separation between your breasts. UNDERWIRES: This bra should lie flat against your rib cage, enclosing your breasts without rubbing or digging into the soft tissue of your armpit. If your breasts bulge, consider a larger cup size. CUPS: The right cupped bra should have a smooth outline without bulging at the top or sides. The cups shouldn’t wrinkle. SUPPORT: It’s up to this bra to support the weight of your boobs, mainly with the underband. The cup and shoulder straps will share the remaining support. SILHOUETTE: Check your silhouette; the bust should be midway between the top of your shoulder and the bend of the elbow to create a perfect silhouette of balanced proportions for your boobs. STRAPS: These should be adjusted to support your bust
