Whether it’s worry, fear, sadness or anger, these emotions can create energy blocks and tension in the abdomen that can contribute to pain and illness, especially digestive and gynaecological problems. If this sounds like you, chi nei tsang – an ancient abdominal massage that focuses on the navel and internal organs – could be the answer. “Chi nei tsang releases the tightness in the abdomen and organs that can result in you becoming unwell,” says anna McDonagh, a chi nei tsang practitioner in Dulwich hill, in Sydney. “It is a slow, deep, yet gentle massage that puts you into a deep state of relaxation and allows you to let go of emotions that cause internal tension.” HEALING from WITHIN gm0813chip152 - 152 2013-06-17T09:44:30+10:00

McDonagh says chi nei tsang can help with all of these and can also assist with some menopausal symptoms as well as after birth pain and discomfort. Abdominal tension can also cause organs to shift from their natural place. Chi nei tsang gently coaxes the abdomen to release the tension, allowing organs to move back into place. “Through the abdomen, chi nei tsang works on all systems of the body: digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous, endocrine, urinary, reproductive, musculoskeletal, and the acupuncture meridian system,” says McDonagh. Ancient history Based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, chi nei tsang was used by Taoist monks in China 2000 years ago to detoxify and refine their bodies to aid the process of spiritual enlightenment. It connected them to their insight, said to ‘reside’ in the abdomen. Today, when coping with stress and anxiety is often higher on the priority list than enlightenment, chi nei tsang can help you release emotions you hold inside and better connect you with your intuition – your gut feeling about what is right for you. Inner secrets According to chi nei tsang, our ‘non-processed’ emotional life – the feelings we don’t deal with – is stored in our digestive system waiting to be addressed. Gilles Marin, author of Healing from Within with Chi Nei Tsang (available from Amazon), says the abdomen and its organs hold “the secrets of a person: things we hide from ourselves“. Marin says chi nei tsang brings our awareness to trouble spots in our abdomen and connects us with our ins
