While some experts believe spirit guides are external, like guardian angels, others view them as internal like an intuitive compass. Either way, spirit guides are wonderful tools to communicate with your inner self and enrich your life. Spirit guides are the carers of our souls, according to Sydney-based psychic medium, Caterina Ligato. At birth we are each allocated a guardian by a higher consciousness that takes care of our soul on earth. “The purpose of our spirit guide is to watch over and guide us,” says Ligato. “They’re also present at death when we transcend back to the spiritual world.” Soul coach Kerrie Wearing wrote A New Kind Of Normal: Unlock The Medium Within (available from Amazon) after her brother committed suicide in 1995. “Grief forced me to create a new kind of normal and unlock my spirituality,” she says. Wearing supports Suicide Prevention Australia through her work helping others communicate with their inner spirit to shift their life path. According to Wearing, spirit guides exist because we are more than just our bodies. “Spirit guides are commonly experienced as external beings so we have tools to access spiritual wisdom, but our own intuition can diminish the need for an external spirit guide,” she says. Connecting with your spirit guide is achievable – it just takes nurturing, adds Wearing. TUNE INTO your gm0813spi2p148 - 148 2013-06-14T16:58:28+10:00

COM/ SNAPPER MEDIA SPIRITUAL SIGNPOSTS Our guides sometimes create a cluster of meaningful events that nudge us in certain directions. “Perhaps you’re drawn to a phrase in a book, then walk past somebody who says the same thing,” says Ligato. Wearing often gets signs from the animal kingdom and recounts a tale of a fox by the roadside, staring into her eyes. “A month later I found a fox curled up dead. Pondering the coincidence, I recognised a career cycle had ended, giving me a renewed sense of direction,” she says. These coincidences are natural occurrences and Wearing says more signs along the way mean that you’re heading in the right direction. Signs are never as specifi c as someone saying, ‘You should do that’. Ligato adds, “It’s up to you to read signs and evolve spiritually. You might take the wrong path, but it’s part of spiritual learning.” Get started Look for the same message coming in diff erent ways – your spirit guide could be trying to tell you something. Pay attention to spiritual guideposts when they pop up then try to decipher messages in relation to your current situation. GUT FEELINGS Guides sometimes create feelings when they want to alert us to something. According to Ligato, guides speak to you through your body and that’s why you may get these instincts. “You might be about to get in the car then decide to stay home. These gut feelings might rescue you from an accident – but it’s not always as dramatic or obvious as that,” says Ligato. Sometimes words might pop into your head that you feel are not your own, adds Ligato, like ‘Don’t go there’ or ‘Stop’. Get started Start taking mental note of your feelings. “Monitor how you feel at certain times of the day – it’s important to honour these gut feelings before anything else,” says Wearing. Accordi

captionVISITING A MEDIUM A medium can help you connect with your guides then use these spiritual resources to gain insight about your life. According to Ligato, a reputable medium can usually identify spirit guides and relay their messages. When booking a medium, decide on your intention. “You might want to connect with your spirit guide or get a message from Nanna who’s passed – these are diff erent things.” According to Ligato, family who have passed watch over you, but they are not spirit guides. Write down a list of questions for your medium and take note of dreams, signs and feelings beforehand. Get started To fi nd a medium, ask your family and friends for recommendations or try the National Federation of Healers at www.nfh.org.au or the Australian Psychics Association at www. newagesupastore.com. SPIRITUAL JOURNAL When searching for spiritual guidance, keeping a journal is extremely benefi cial. “A journal is a great way of monitoring progress with your spirit guide because you can refer back to it later,” says spiritual life path counsellor Ruth Phillips. “If you heeded warning signs about something that ended negatively, or had positive outcomes from acting on a gut feeling, then your connection is strengthening.” Phillips suggests you note down gut feelings, signs and dreams and date them so you can check if you made the right choices. Get started In a quiet space, try writing in your journal in a question and answer format. Write down questions you would like to ask your guides, then just trust in the fl ow of what comes to mind for the answers. MEDITATION Mastering meditation is the key to unlocking the inner spirit, according to Dr Ramesh Manocha, author of Silence Your Mind (Hachette Australia, $29.99). “Meditation is about being in the present moment and that’s when intuition operates at maximum capacity,” says Manocha.
