As a paediatric dietitian at The Children’s Hospital, Westmead, Burrell is disappointed that many people take an all-or-nothing approach to health. “Eating well and exercising is something we need to do most days for the rest of our lives.” Food lover Burrell lives in Sydney and likes to stock up on her favourites from small, local grocers. I make vegetable soup every week for work lunches plus one or two other meals. I tend to eat out three nights a week. My dinners might be lamb salad, grilled salmon and roasted vegetables or a bolognaise sauce without pasta. My best friend makes chicken and vegetarian pies, which I store in the freezer for busy nights. WHAT’S YOUR AVERAGE WEEKLY GROCERY BUDGET? At least $100. If it’s my turn to have the family over for dinner I spend more, as we NEVER GO TO THE SUPERMARKET HUNGRY AND STICK TO THE OUTSIDE AISLES TO AVOID THE SWEETS AND SOFT DRINK SECTIONS. like to indulge in wine and dessert. They’re great for mixing into casseroles and salads. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE FOOD INDULGENCE? I love making cakes and desserts – they’re some of life’s real pleasures. Homemade banana bread or crème brûlée is welcome in my house. The trick? Don’t have them often and watch your portion size. WHAT’S A HEALTHY DINNER YOU COOK FOR YOUR FAMILY EVERY WEEK? Spaghetti bolognaise is a family favourite. I use the leanest mince I can get and load it up with tinned tomatoes, onion, garlic, carrots a “It frustrates me that families don’t question what’s nd red kidney beans. in their food.
