wacky and real life
This is the moment the driver of a burning lorry speeds out of town to protect residents from harm after a bundling welder set fire to his cargo. The hero driver has now even been rewarded with a brand new lorry from China's leading automaker for risking his life to prevent harm to others. The incident took place in the city of Xinmin in the north-eastern province of Liaoning, bordering with North Korea, on 14th July. Stunned residents filmed the lorry driver speeding through the streets while repeatedly sounding his horn, as seen in the video. The driver, identified as Sun Gang, later said that he put aside fears for his own safety and moved the burning vehicle as far away from populated areas as possible, according to news site Xinhuanet. Sun added that he drove the vehicle to an area of wasteland and managed to jump out before the vehicle exploded. He stayed to watch his lorry, which he drove to support his family, burn on the wasteground. The fire started when he sent the lorry for repairs and a welder accidentally set fire to the straw previously used as bedding when transporting watermelons. Sun added that he had just filled the fuel tank and was worried that the lorry could explode at any time. He said: “At that time, the situation was urgent. I had no time to think. I jumped in the truck and took off, with flames all around me. I couldn't let anyone else get involved.” Sun had used his life saving to buy the lorry in 2018, only recently managing to pay off the loan. He said: “After the incident, everyone in my family was just happy that no one was hurt. But of course, the lorry was destroyed, and we were all upset that we'd have to start all over again.” However, China's leading automaker First Automotive Works (FAW) Group has now reportedly gifted Sun with a brand new lorry of its Jiefang brand for risking his life to prevent harm to others. Company general manager Zhu Qixin said the vehicle is to compensate him for the one he lost, which was also of the same model. When he was told of the new lorry, Sun said: “I couldn't believe it. I thought it might be a prank call.” (T4 / ends)
