Chinas New Typhoon Detection Drone Makes Test Flight

China’s new Wing Loong-10 drone has successfully carried out its first typhoon detection test flight. China's domestically-developed high-altitude drone was reportedly flown over the country’s southernmost province of Hainan as Typhoon Sinlaku hit over the weekend, the government confirmed on its website. (https://bit.ly/31osLMr) The test flight was considered a breakthrough for China's typhoon detection and forecast system. The Wing Loong-10 drone is also capable of carrying out military operations including armed reconnaissance. During the test flight, the drone took off from the Qionghai Bo'ao Airport in Hainan Province and conducted a multidimensional scan of Typhoon Sinlaku with its wave radar. The collected data on temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and hydrometeors was sent back to experts on the ground in real time. (https://bit.ly/3kgnPSp) Typhoons cause around 29.5 billion RMB (3.2 billion GBP) in economic losses every year in China and drones have the potential to greatly improve forecasts. The Wing Loong-10 drone is built by Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group as part of the state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC). Some observers said the drone bears a strong resemblance to the company’s Cloud Shadow drone, designed for reconnaissance and precision strike missions. The Wing Loong drones and the Cloud Shadow series are available on the international market. The Wing Loong-10 is still in its development phase and more tests are expected to be carried out.
