This is the moment a shocked family finds a box of over a dozen fresh quail eggs has suddenly hatched into chicks in their kitchen after being left uneaten for two weeks. Cheng Wenjuan, from the township of Erlun in Taiwan’s western Yunlin County, turned to Facebook for help after she and her family unexpectedly found themselves with 20 Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) chicks. (https://bit.ly/2DpIcvO) Images taken in Ms Cheng’s home shows the little chicks having burst out of their tiny shells after being kept in a plastic box above their oven for two weeks. Quail eggs for consumption are usually sold unfertilised, but the Cheng family appeared to have received a batch of fertilised eggs instead, director of the county agriculture, Hsieh Jung-cheng, office told Taipei-based China Times. (https://bit.ly/39UruAV) In warm enough conditions, fertilised eggs can hatch on their own after 18 days, Mr Hsieh said. Ms Cheng revealed in her social media post that she had put all the hatched quail chicks in a big foam box. She said her family did not know how to raise the birds, so they offered them up to neighbours and friends. All 20 chicks have since been adopted, she said in her post. Yunlin County is currently experiencing daytime temperatures reaching 38 degrees Celsius, which are suitable for the incubation of quail eggs even without the presence of a hen, Mr Hsieh said.
