This is the moment a distressed toddler wails loudly as a doctor plucks a live leech measuring over 1 inch long out his left nostril. The 18-month-old from the city of Liupanshui, in Guizhou Province in south-western China, was brought to Panjiang General Hospital after suffering nose bleeds for “seven to eight days”, his mother Ms Chen said. The tot was admitted to the emergency department by duty medic Chu Xiao on 1st June, according to hospital report the following day. Doctor Chu said she found mucus in the boy’s nose and at first believed his consistent nose bleeds may have been caused by a blood clotting disorder. However, when inspecting his nasal cavity, she found a “black organism” wriggling around inside. Footage from the facility shows the toddler crying loudly in distress as Doctor Chu reaches into his left nostrils with a pair of grabbers and yanks the 3-centimetre (1.2 inches) leech out. The medic had anaesthetised the leech in order to make it release its suckers, according to the hospital report, which also included an image of the fat leech after it had been removed intact. Doctor Chu said she believed the leech had been living in the boy’s nose for more than a week ever since his nose bleeds started. Ms Chen said she brought her son with her while working in a rice paddy recently. The boy was allowed to play on his own, and is believed to have unwittingly hosted the parasite from that day.
