One Eyed Beast By Alexander Greensmith **EXCLUSIVE** EYE OF THE LION: A photographer has snapped a four-hundred-and-forty pound lion with a gouged out hole where his eye should be. A gruesome picture has captured a seven-year-old lion known as 'One Eye' looking towards the camera with a bloodied hole over his right eye. The snaps were taken by safari guide, Shaun Malan (39), a resident of Khwai, Botswana, which was also the location of this photography of the brave beast. The four-foot big cat would often relax and let Mr Malan come as close as ten feet away to take photos on his Nikon D4S with a 300mm lens. “His eye wasn’t fully out so he could still see," he said. “Only a few days later he was out chasing zebras again. It was almost as if it was just pushed in. “I think it was impaled by a buffalo horn, or perhaps from a dominance fight with another male lion.” As if the threat of poaching and climate change wasn’t enough, the lion now hopes to escape possible death caused by infection from the injured eye. Lions in the wild live for up to 14 years, so Shaun is unsure if he will ever see his old pal again who he once saw for four hours a week. “He could still see, but he lost a bit of status in territory as a result," he added. “I first met this lion in a coalition in 2014, there were five of them before two new males came in a year ago and chased them all out and killed quite a few of their cubs. “Sadly we think we also lost one of One Eye’s brothers as well. “Maggots should help a lot with the healing process, and hopefully One Eye will pull through. Lions have an incredible sense of healing; they survive things you think they’d never survive.” You can follow the South African-born safari guide and friend of One Eye on Instagram @shaun_malan_photography, where he has over 13,000 followers as of June 2020.
