captionThis viral video seen nearly two million times shows a Loch Ness-style 'monster' swimming in Asia's longest river and netizens are divided about whether the mysterious sighting could be. The eerie footage shot from a bridge shows what appears to be a serpentine creature slithering just below the murky surface of the Yangtze River in Yichang City in Central China’s Hubei Province. According to reports, the mysterious animal was sighted within the boundaries of the Three Gorges Dam Scenic Area, which is a popular tourist destination for river cruises. The snake-like monster appears to be as thick as an average adult human’s thigh; and looks to be at least 10 feet long, the video shows. The footage shows it swimming against the river current with ease. The Yangtze is Asia’s longest river at 6,300 kilometres (3,915 miles), running eastward through almost the entire width of China and exiting into the East China Sea. The crucial, life-sustaining waterway is no stranger to ancient tales of river monsters including wingless dragons. Members of the public, however, have speculated that the latest sighting could in fact be that of a species of python. In particular, Burmese python (Python bivittatus), which are often found in China, are capable of growing to the size seen in the video. Though mainly land-dwelling, the snake is also an excellent swimmer. So far, however, Yichang forestry officials have yet to comment on the creature’s possible identity. Social media user ‘DANIU_S’ wrote: “That must be a water snake.” ‘Manbu Wuxi’ added: “Why is every image of a mysterious monster always so blurry?” ‘kingofLiu’ said: “It may be a large piece of floating rubbish?” (T4 / ends)
